Nothing to report. I”ve been largely dozing. No news of Helen — was she teaching today? We have various problems which need referral to her. I’ll try phoning soon.
I failed at Wordle — my winning streak hadn’t even reached 10. Roger had sox and Theo five, Mark a distinguished three. Four elsewhere .
Jean, I wonder whether you'd be interested in reading or listening to Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. The New York Times polled both well-known authors and readers, separately, for the best 100 books of the 21st century, and Demon Copperhead made it onto both lists (in the No. 1 spot for readers). It's a much more compassionate--and, to many, accurate--take on Appalachia than Hillbilly Elegy. As the NYT put it, "In transplanting “David Copperfield” from Victorian England to modern-day Appalachia, Kingsolver gives the old Dickensian magic her own spin. She reminds us that a novel can be wildly entertaining — funny, profane, sentimental, suspenseful — and still have a social conscience. And also that the injustices Dickens railed against are still very much with us: old poison in new bottles." I loved it.
ReplyDeleteI recently listened to David Copperfield in preparation for reading Demon Copperhead. I do enjoy Dickens on an audiobook! Also, barely made Wordle yesterday. Six.
