I'm in a bad way this morning, for some reason – panic. Recent events in Paris are singularly depressing – more so, in a way, even than 9/11 or the bombs in the London underground. That doesn't seem much of an explanation.

Nor is there anything to report. Half a scallop yesterday, on the edging of the Unst Bridal Shawl.

I have been thinking on the same lines, Cam – what shall I buy with my (tax-free) £50 if I win my political bet (yesterday)? It won't be enough for a full-scale Wonderful Knitting Project, but something will be required to mark the occasion.

And, Ellen, Snap! on the signed first edition of Kaffe's Glorious Knitting. I've got one too. I remember buying the book. Money was tighter then, but I remember thinking as I held it in the bookstore, that it was a book I was going to have to have one day, so I might as well get it now.

My encounter with the Great Man was nothing so much fun as a class. He came along, some years later, to the big Birmingham department store to give a little talk. I think Brandon M. was there too. It was a glum November evening and only half a dozen or so had turned out. He might have sulked, but he didn't. He talked enthusiastically for a while about the design inspiration to be found in things like a near-by display of striped towels. He left us talking happily to each other, as if we had been guests at a little party.

And I took my Glorious Knitting along and asked him to sign it.

Well, I'd better get on with Sunday, hoping for more cheerfulness and energy tomorrow. It's time to take the income tax back in hand and get the return filed.

  1. Dear Jean, I wish you were here so I could give you a cup of something and share your miseries. I wonder if writing to us helps at all with your panic. When I was having panic attacks nothing much seemed to help but since I got my blood pressure under control I don't have panic attacks any more. I wish your issues had a physical cure. Anyway if writing to us helps you can write on here any time. And if you would appreciate e-mails just ask. We need to have you happy and writing every day; so many of us start our day with you! You probably have no idea!

I hope your Sunday improves. Getting rid of the taxes would surely help.

  3. I am so sorry you are having the panic feelings again as you have seemed so much brighter since the end of the holidays. The events in and around Paris are certainly enough to upset anyone. Even here in California, I have been checking the online news or the radio every couple of hours. Good wishes to you. Just think how far along with the taxes you are!

I'm sorry about the feelings of panic. I was watching the Edinburgh cross country running on the TV yesterday and wondered if there just may have been a glimpse of D Place or even of you! A bottle of cider and a session with some knitting books pulled out at random might be good therapy for you. Jan, North Yorks

  5. I agree with KayT. Also, have you spoken to your medical advisor about your panicky feelings?
We wish we could banish then for you. Tax time always creates panic and over the top grumpiness at my home.

I know you recognize this quote - for the benefit of those who don't.

  7. sending big hugs from across the pond. gray and gloomy here as i watch snatches of CNN and BBC coverage of the PARIS march and Netanyahu at the Grand Synangogue...

the solidarity and outpouring of emotion should help soothe all of us in these troubling times

although i keep watching the half dozen bodyguards encircling Netanyahu at EVERY MOVE - dont envy them their jobs today - imagine they were not thrilled with this trip

however it does the world good to see the support of all the European and beyond elected and sovereign leadership.

not sure how i feel about US not sending at least Biden. security has been cited as the reason but one wonders if its to keep out of fire from the inevitable criticism.
