You're not here to read about a missing iPad. I knit for 79 years without one (more or less) and ought to be able to manage it again.

Kristen, Archie himself had exactly your idea yesterday. He came over in the afternoon, fully confident that he could find the iPad. He searched the house thoroughly, likely rooms as well as unlikely ones. He lay on the floor and looked under the furniture. He shone a strong torch (=flashlight) into dark corners. He listened to my detailed account of where-I-had-it-Thursday-evening (in the sitting room, with the pattern for the linen Pocket Square on it) and what-I-was-doing-with-it-Friday-morning (here, Zite).

And we tried FaceTime. My sister did it from CT while Archie was here. I could hear her device ringing in CT while Archie went from room to room listening in vain for mine. (Is it turned off? What does that mean exactly? It goes off – usually – when I close the lid of its cover and of course turns itself off if it thinks I'm not paying enough attention to it.) We had also tried FaceTime earlier in the day – Greek Helen tried it from Athens, and again I could hear her machine ringing.

Archie both reads and writes fantasy fiction, but he doesn't believe in the supernatural. Even he was coming around to my theory of a Malign Force by the time the afternoon was over.

I showed him the progress of his sweater, although we didn't take time off the search to attempt a try-on. He approved of the red hem of the one finished sleeve.

I don't really believe in the supernatural either, but I have a leaden feeling that this baby is gone.

I'll try to do some serious knitting today.

  2. Sorry to hear that the searching has been fruitless (so far). I can only offer sympathy and a general shout out to the universe for some thing positive to happen.....

I agree with Knitalot that it wouldn't hurt to check with your neighbour whom you visited and also with your oculist's office. Sometimes when I misplace something important I get so frantic that my mind plays tricks on me and I become convinced that it was in my possession on a certain day or time when in fact it was already missing. Don't lose heart. I once recovered my crucial daytimer three weeks after I left it at a car rental desk by retracing my steps through my diary entries. Good luck to you!

In my life, most lost things turn up beteen the seat cushions and the couch where I customarily knit (I always feel around in there midst the crumbs when I need more stitch markers). I checked, and an Ipad can easily slip down the back, between the seat cushion and the back. Good luck. My husband has "lost forever" his iPad on several occasions...it always reappears.

  7. In fact, we probably are here to read about your missing ipad - or to hear that it has been miraculously restored to you. It will most likely turn up when you have stopped looking for it.

You have probably already looked but could it be in your handbag or in the auto?

  9. Perhaps it's in amongst books or magazines. With its thin width it could have slipped amongst them.

Sending good karma and more prayers.

  10. Jean, you love using your iPad on a daily basis. I suggest you go to John Lewis today and purchase a new one. If the old one happens to turn up you can pass it along to one of your young grandsons.

You mentioned you had two callers on the day it went missing. Although you state they didn't cross the threshold, is it possible your iPad got mixed up with any goods inwards/outwards or handed back with any signed paperwork? Did you prepare any mail or parcels that day? Did you visit your basement looking for knitting books? Have you checked where you store your trays, mats, etc? We'll solve this puzzle eventually!

Please buy yourself a new one right away. Life is too short to deprive yourself of a tool that you treasure and use on a daily basis.
And it is almost a certainty that, the way the universe often seems to work, as soon as you purchase a new one, your old one will miraculously turn up in plain sight! Then you will have a spare :)

  13. I agree with those who've suggested buying a new one. At this point, the anxiety is costing you valuable peace of mind. I don't have an iPad--my son does--and I have "lost" it by gathering it up in my magazines and books, which others here have experienced. Also, some tips on what to do next here: http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201472 Good luck, Jean. My sympathies and hugs.

  14. Seems to me it's time to pray. I can't tell you how many times when I'm looking for something and can't find it, I turn to prayer and in just a matter of minutes, usually, I find the item.

  16. It's too late now, but there is an app called "Find my iPhone" (works for anything Macintosh). You have to have it loaded on the missing device BEFORE you lose it. Then when you have lost it, you go to icloud.com on another computer and log in. It will find all the various devices of yours that have the app loaded. Then you may choose to either 1. have it chime loudly (i found my ipod in the drawer with the sieves), 2. post a message that you choose (eg. if found, call xxx-xxx-xxxx. Reward!) or 3. completely erase itself and lock down (e.g., so that thieves can't access your financial data).

Recently a young woman's car went off the road and down into a remote gully. Search and rescue had no luck finding her. Finally (3 days later) the mother remembered "Find my iphone". The phone was located (with the girl) and a helicopter was able to lift her to safety after she was cut out of the car. The newest devices will remember their last location just before the power is totally drained.

That's the best explanation I've heard. I never did understand how they could be found if they were drained of power but now makes sense....I think I will follow this up with mine now. Thanks
