Thomas M. – the one the Calcutta Cup scarf was knit for recently – had a bad accident yesterday playing football. Tibia and fibula shattered, prolonged surgery. Doctors hope he is young enough to make a complete recovery.

My own day was less exciting. Archie came this morning – his university is on strike – and we got some things done, and had a walk.

Knitting

477 stitches on the Dathan hap when the current long, long wrong-side row is finished. It’ll feel like progress when I’m within 100 stitches of the end (597, I think.) I should be able to get there this week.

Weavinfool, you are a temptress (why not finish off the Dathan now? Comment yesterday). Two reasons, though: one is that I love my first Dathan, and find it a perfect size. And the other is that I’ve got all this yarn that I bought on Shetland, and it would be as well to consume some more of it.

Reading

I continue to enjoy Middlemarch. I’ve lost hold of the radio broadcasts but I think I know how to retrieve the podcast. I wish the television series from 20 years ago was available somewhere, but it doesn’t seem to be.

  1. I listened to audio books of several of the Barchester Chronicles. Perhaps if I do that I can get to the Pallisers. I'm sorry to hear about your grandson's injury. At least he does have youth, and presumably fitness, on his side.

  4. What an awful thing to happen to your grandson! My husband commented that the narrator on the current BBC version is Juliet Aubrey who played Dorothea in the tv version.

So sorry to hear about Thomas M's injury and hope his body is indeed young enough to heal well from this.

Very sorry to hear about Thomas. Hoping he isn't suffering too much.

I think you are right to continue with the Dathan hap until it is the size you want.

Is your Middlemarch podcast from Librivox? I'm pretty sure it is available there.

  8. Saw this article online and thought you might enjoy reading about the newly found mosaic floor in Turkey https://www.archaeology-world.com/gigantic-roman-mosaic-discovered-under-a-farmers-field/?fbclid=IwAR3NpJucxpJyIx56akyxHk0LFAFtJLwjZTJRXPwhCa-mGU98hsO2ynaV9sM

Prayers for Thomas to heal well.
It's nice to know that the size is right for you.
I did a search on Youtube and I think at least parts of the TV series are currently available.

  10. My point, I think, was to knit to the size you want. To use up MY yarn, my shawl would stretch from sea to shining sea. There is no magic size in shawls.
Thomas must have taken quite a fall. Was it soccer or rugby? Best healing wishes to Thomas.

Having experienced the same shattering of tib/fib as Thomas at a far more advanced age, I can hold out hope! My longest lasting problem from that was that I could never run again without pain. But walking is still a constant pleasure.

  12. Hi Jean! Poor Thomas! Prayers.
I think if you use a different browser than your blogger account, then somehow they don't want to let that comment through. I found my comments when using my iPad went into cyber nowhere, so I only comment using my computers now.
I'm sorry you felt horrible in the night. That DOES wear one out completely.
My mother sent me a knitting pattern for something called a prayer square so I've been finishing one. I think it's like a clinging cross, you hold it when you pray.
    Take care, good Jean.

  13. BBC has an app for mobile devices. It’s called bbc sounds. You can listen to recent episodes of current programs. It’s fairly easy to use. The latest iteration replaced the bbc iplayer app that many loved. I am not as enamored of this new version but it does what it needs to do. Download it they the App Store on the iPhone or play store on an android device.

    Best wishes to young Thomas.
