All is more or less in order here, with the emphasis perhaps rather on “less” than “more”. James and Cathy and their daughters should be here within the hour. Sparkling water is chilling for them in the refrigerator (they are an abstemious family). The Jamie Oliver traybake is ready to go – briefly – into the oven, including the salmon which I managed to purchase this morning after a struggle up the hill.

And we don’t have to start at the crack of dawn tomorrow.

Thank you for your comments about Fitbit.  I would be almost embarrassed to have one – I mean, to let Fitbit know how unfit I am. But perhaps it would help, first to find out how many steps I take in a normal, sluggish day; then to raise the target a bit; then a bit more.Would it work?

Knitting

Today's Fruity Knitting is extremely interesting. I want to order wool from this week’s Shepherdess, and I am very interested in Asa Tricosa’s Ziggurat top-down seamless method of sweater knitting. The book is expensive, and Amazon doesn’t have it; but it sounds as if it belongs on my shelves. Asa and EZ would have hit it off, I feel very sure.

I have a week to cool down – there’s no use ordering such a thing when I won’t be here to open the door to the postman.

I advanced Archie’s sock somewhat last night, watching “Lewis”. Like the absurd “Endeavour” of the evening before, it derives from Colin Dexter’s “Morse” books. I’ve never read any of them, but “Morse” was an enjoyable television series.

I won’t try to blog from Strathardle. I should be back in a week.

  1. Hi Jean,
I use my android phone to keep track of my steps. It is so easy as long as I remember to put my mobile phone in my pocket. The app is free and is on most phones, so if you have an iphone or android (LG or Samsung) you are all set. No need to buy a fitbit as cute as they are. I have found it is helpful to keep track of exercise.
Enjoy your trip to Strathardle and the joys of family.

  2. My daughter and I both use apps on our phones to track our steps. Ask Archie-he’s sure to know how to set up your phone. Enjoy your week with family. Safe journey.

  3. I like Fruity Knitting's new episode, too. I also want that book. I liked listening to the author/designer/knitter extraordinaire speak about her ideas.
I like knowing how many steps I take so I think it's nice to have a small indicator telling me what makes a higher step count day and what a low step count day entails.
I have bookclub at our house tomorrow and should be cleaning and straightening up, but of course I'd rather be click, click, clicking. Enjoy your guests, Jean.

  4. I have Åsa's book and I love it. The beginning of the method is a little fiddly but the end result is worth it. I've already finished the Chatoyant sweater as I don't have much oomph to do much else in this heat.

I hope Helen's family are well away from these terrible Greek fires.

  5. I purchased a single Ziggurat pattern some years ago on Ravelry. I have yet to try it, of course. I will, really, I will. Have a lovely week!

Thanks so much for this! I do enjoy David Sedaris but had never seen this one. Fitbit until it broke, and now the counter on my phone, is the reason I pace around the house while on the phone.

I got the fit bit to track my movements up and down stairs. It mostly told me to get up and move while I was up and moving. Provided some laughs.... Have a wonderful time in Strathardle, See you soon!

  9. I've been wondering which episode of Endeavour did not meet with your approval. I've been quite enjoying it, as I did Morse and Lewis, though like you I never read the books. I did have a go at the first Morse novel recently, but I didn't get on with it; it hadn't aged well. I've always thought the Fitbit a ridiculous item, but then I recalled that I once used to count my steps, but as an aid in learning a language, not in the interest of fitness, so to each her own.

A friend used to buy inexpensive pedometers to count his steps, but they didn't seem to last - he kept buying more. Probably the phone app is best, since it doesn't add to the stuff you have to carry, and most people seem to carry their phones everywhere.
    Enjoy Strathardle!

  11. Have a great time with the family!

Yes, a Fitbit or other step tracker might help. I have friends with them and the consensus among them is that while it may not be 100% accurate, it does make them think more about walking and thus getting more walking into their days.

  12. Totally agree with your assessment of "Endeavour," but confess I love it nonetheless! I remember the timeframe and miss Mr. Thaw and enjoy the fact that his daughter is in the show.

  13. Hi, if you are coming to Detroit, you might look into a Great Lakes cruise. They are small ships and you get to see beautiful things you haven't even thought of before . I don't know about availability, but going on this type of cruise is on my bucket list.
