Not a good day.

1  1.   The cruise has been cancelled. I don’t know exactly why, yet. The boss wrote to us all today – phone calls promised soon. Rachel says that it’s because Nicola (our leader) said yesterday that one shouldn’t travel outside the range of one’s health authority unless it was essential. Anyway, it’s up to the Majestic Line to decide, not me. The boss is clearly very cross at Nicola. My beautiful, expensive clothes arrived today from Toast (British readers will know). I don’t suppose I can send them back with a note to say that my cruise has been cancelled?

2  2.   Baby Hamish and his mother Christina are in hospital. I don’t think it’s terribly serious, just terribly uncomfortable. He’s got a cold (not the virus) and is stuffed up and can’t breathe and is still entirely breast-fed. A bad night was had by all, last night, but I think things are better today. And it’s good to know that the NHS still has time and strength and space for non-covid cases.

3  3.   My sourdough loaf turned out rather flat and cannon-ball like (if cannon-balls were flat), my least successful to date.

4  4.   I thought there was something else, but perhaps not. And at least I don’t have to worry about my cats. I lay in bed this morning doing just that.

So, not much knitting. All day I felt that I was owed a treat, but couldn’t think of an appropriate one to bestow upon myself. C. says that when things settle down we will have a gala lunch or supper and wear our cruise clothes. And I do feel less guilty than usual about un-done Italian as the weekend lesson approaches.

The “Alterknit” books have arrived – not, so far the one with cables. I feel pretty sure that they are indeed related to the remembered book I mentioned yesterday – but, indeed, I can’t find it. The general idea is bright colours, basic shapes, and wonderful, inventive “Fair Isle” motifs.

  1. I'm sorry about the cancellation of your cruise. It seems inevitable given the uneasy state of the whole world re Covid. Try to look on the bright side. Treat yourself to something special.

  2. So sorry to hear about your cruise being cancelled, as things progress I become more convinced that my cruise of Scotland scheduled for spring 2021 will also be cancelled. I think C has the right idea, keep those clothes and look forward to wearing them at a really splendid dinner in the (near )future.
Right now Ontario ( particularly the Greater Toronto area) is having record numbers of cases. And the powers that be want Thanksgiving (celebrated this Monday) to be a very low key affair. One expert says “ if it’s not the roof you sleep under don’t go into that house”. With the weather getting colder any outdoor gatherings or visits will be harder and harder. If I thought my old ski clothes would still fit I might
dig them out of storage. Stay well.

Bummer all around. I wonder whether the sourdough got too cold. I tried making yogurt last week and it just didn't do anything in my not-yet-heated kitchen.
I'd say keep the clothes. So many businesses are going down, they may not be available when you want them again.

  4. So sorry to hear your cruise was cancelled. I was looking forward to hearing about it once you returned. So disappointing.
Treat yourself to something nice when you decide what that is and enjoy a good dinner out in the cruise attire.

  5. Very disappointing. I feel for you. I suppose "better safe than sorry" but our tourist industry is barely alive right now too.

  6. Perhaps your treat could be some luxurious wool to use with one of the books you have just bought and maybe some fancy meals delivered to your house from a local restaurant?

  8. Oh, Jean, I a so sorry about your cruise, but to be honest I am glad you are staying at home and safe. You will wear the clothes at some point in the future, as others have said at a nice lunch or dinner. And I agree that you are due a nice treat. Perhaps you can think of something that you have really missed over the last months. And I was wondering if your wonderful cleaner can help you locate the errant books?

  9. Wear your new clothes and enjoy them! Seems like no one is going very far these days. One of my best friends was at a Yom Kippur dinner with relatives, one of whom tested positive. My friend has spent almost two weeks in her apartment. Buy some nice yarn and/or a festive dinner as a treat.

I'm also sorry about the cruise, though not surprised. I'm glad you'll be home and safe, and your cats will be happy, too, I'm sure.

Maybe for a treat, you & Helen could dash to Strathardle for one last trip before winter sets in? Or is it already too cold?

  11. Oh, sorry to hear about the cruise. And of course I’m sure you could return the clothes if you wanted to, or wear the for a dinner out, in the not too distafuture, I hope. I was just thinking today that I don’t wear any nice clothes unless I am leaving the house - grocery shopping doesn’t count! Perhaps I should make more of an effort...

I was actually worried about you going on the cruise, but very sorry it was cancelled. Avoiding groups really seems the safest policy these days.
I was in Bologna last year and wandered by a street fair of information from the civil protection guard. Great handouts on earthquakes, floods etc. Their slogan was "Io non rischio". Is that something like "I won't take a risk"?
I am sticking with the routine of grocery delivery, no public transit, staying close to home at present. I won't knit all of the yarn stash or read all of the available books ...
    Stay well!

  13. So sorry about all the grey news for you yesterday. Sounds like a 'one thing after another' sort of day - hope today comes out brighter.

Oh Jean, so sorry about the cruise. Talk about life interrupted...keeping the clothes seems like a good idea. Hopefully Majestic Line will keep your place for their next available cruise. Once travel bans are lifted I imagine there will be a mad rush to Get Out Of Town. Chloe

  15. I feel your disappointment, Jean. My husband and I had booked for their Outer Hebrides cruise in June/July of 2019 to celebrate our 50th. My husband experienced a detached retina and had the surgery to repair it at the end of May 2019. He wasn't allowed to fly for at least eight weeks and we rolled the cruise over to the same cruise for 2020. That didn't happen either. I feel sad for all the businesses that have been so cruelly punished by this virus.

  16. What a disappointment that your cruise is cancelled, but on the other hand it's reassuring that in Scotland your public officials are looking out for people, unlike in some countries. I didn't know about Toast until you mentioned it once, and yes, Toast clothes are an investment! At least on my budget. I too hope you decide to keep what you bought. Giving up both would be too sad. Disappointment for you, but the cats would be happy if they understood!

  18. Not to get too Pollyanna-ish, but in your family, there's bound to be a wedding or a christening for which the new clothes will be just right! I am sorry about the cruise -- ever since you wrote about Majestic the first time, that's been my dream vacation. I still hope to go one day! As Snickers says, cider is nice, too!
