Poor Hillary.

“Basket of deplorables” would have been enough of a stumble for one weekend.

The BBC’s Jon Sopel said, interestingly, on the Today programme today, that someone had suggested to him that in this extraordinary year, whichever candidate the campaign focused on, would be the loser. If it was all about Trump, Hillary would win. And if…  And for the moment, undoubtedly, it’s all about Hillary.

It’s interesting that Trump has been completely silent on the subject for almost 24 hours now.

Knitting

Very little to report. I got the second sock cast on and well started. The first one looks big, but the intended recipient is a big man.

I didn’t even pick up the Uncia. The visit to my husband was a tough one. He’s not interested in a care home. “It’s too late for that.” Thank you for the tip about Age Concern Scotland, Helen(anon). I’ve had a quick look and it certainly sounds as if we could claim Attendance Allowance. However, money isn’t the problem. Essentially, it’s bad temper. There’s nothing anyone can do about that.

Non-knit

Yes, Abstract Fibre (comment yesterday), we have a grand view of the downstairs garden from all the windows in the back of our house, and it is a great pleasure to us. Our neighbours moved in at the same time as we did, 23 years ago I think it was. They have been good neighbours to us through the years, and we will miss them. We have enjoyed watching the garden evolve.

It must be one of (if not the) biggest gardens in the New Town. Its size was an attraction for Compton Mackenzie when he moved here at the end of his life.

  1. My mother, 99, said she did not want the care home but in the end too many falls and a broken hip meant it had to be. She has survived it and actually appreciates the busy nature, there is always someone to talk to, always 2 people to help move her and instant medical help if needed. I prefer it as I know she is safe , though of course she would prefer to be younger and fitter! But staying in her own home would have been a lonely and dispiriting life. They really are not the workhouses of our imaginations!

  2. Sorry meant to add hope you work something out for your husband, my mum did respite visits first and secretly liked it, better than hospital she said.

  3. So sorry - the bad temper just makes everything worse. But on a brighter note, I see this book is available today from the Shetland Times- although you may have already mentioned it http://www.shetlandtimes.co.uk/shop/product.php?productid=338&cat=0&page=. SHetlanders Fair Isle Graph book

My heart goes out to both of you. As someone once so eloquently put it: "Old age ain't for sissies." Judith seems to have offered a ray of hope. Chloe

  6. My dad was so grouchy in the rehab place, too. I hope today is somehow a more upbeat day for your husband.
Hillary needs a week off but I'm sure she won't take one. I don't think Trump will comment because he doesn't want her to be ill really. They WERE amiable acquaintances once upon a time. I don't know how they handle the frenetic pace.

  7. One of the (very few) good ponts about dementia is that the sufferer loses grip on time and place. In my mother's case this meant that the care home she lived in for many years held no fears as she was convinced that she was still at home in her own house. my husband's stepmother, currently in a home, deals with it by viewing herself as akind of resistance fighter, and making plans for the bicycle she will ride once her health improves.
Would your husband be any crosser than he is at present?

Glad my battery suggestion about the mouse helped. Made up a bit for my setting you adrift a little regarding the written instructions for Uncia. Although it appears you still prefer the charts, it might be good to have the written out version as clarification from time to time. At
least that's my theory :-). Chloe
