And more sunshine today, although bitter cold.

Helen is safely back from Kirkmichael. That’s about it, for event. C. came this morning. She has had a busy week looking after her grandsons while her daughter and son-in-law move house. The move is done, the little boys happily installed in their new bedrooms.

Thank you for comments, again. We are proceeding as you suggest, Shandy and others — concentrating on a wheelchair at first. We are going to hire one for a week to see what difference it makes. I think there’s a lot in what you say, Rebecca, in getting a physio of some sort in to advise on the mechanics of getting about. My right leg is still fairly sound. There must be some solution to the problem of those six steps. I’m not absolutely sure I couldn’t manage with two carers, one on each side; just walk down.

Not much knitting. The cat continues to impede.

We have cancelled an appt for tomorrow for a hip xray. I feared that the whole day would have been devoted to those six steps, with little result. Once we’ve cracked that problem I can turn up at a hospital whenever they bid me.

Wordle: many of us found it tougher today. Five for me, where I was joined by Roger, Theo and Thomas. All of us got bogged down in the search for the first letter, with four greens to follow. Everyone else scored four.

  1. A couple of thoughts. We had steps and the Social service body arranged for a company to put a ramp over them. Again, social services are maybe different in Scotland. You should be entitled to an assessment though.
Otherwise, could you have a handrail on one side, a person at the other side and one in front also,

  2. My sister, a (retired) physiotherapist, suggests getting advice from a qualified person first. There are some excellent small electric chairs for indoors - not cheap, but cheaper than moving into care. There are also portable ramps but they will depend on the configuration of your steps.
    Watching all this with interest!

Jean, my mother had an indoor mobility scooter, she whizzed around the house with that.
A ramp is unlikely to work with no garden, but an outdoor chairlift might be an option.

A stair-climbing wheelchair. Lots available, store them indoors. You slip from your usual chair onto the stair one, and it goes up or down on its own, then slip back onto your ordinary chair. Needs only one person to help.

  5. I treated myself to Bee Wilson's cookbook at your suggestion. Don't you just love cooks who stress how simple it all can be and then share an ingredients list full of ten types of unicorn horn? I know you knew her Duncan- Jones grandparents at Birmingham. The chicken traybake with fennel is delicious.

A stair-climbing wheelchair? I do learn a great deal from your blog, Jean, and not always about knitting. Wordle in 3 yesterday!
