All went well at the hospital. Lots and lots of questions. A few tests. I think we have to go back for another one before the operation. There seemed to be no question of not doing it. Given the state of misery I’m in, it’s worth the risk, they said. The surgeon will be the man I consulted privately (who declined to operate and said to wait for the NHS). I think he edged me up the queue.

I got home in a state of near-collapse in which I remain. I’ll go back to bed in a moment. Perhaps I’ll have Wafa bring me some toast. I am trying to consume a tub of cottage cheese from the expensive hospital M&S.

Wordle: five for me. I was in a pretty strung-up state this morning — couldn’t finish my breakfast. That never happens. So maybe that’s why. Ketki also had five. Fours from Thomas and Theo and Mark. Three from Alexander. A most uncharacteristic silence from Rachel.

  1. This all sounds very promising. I notice that each time you mention food it is low in calories- salad, cottage cheese etc. You need calorie rich food such as cream cheese. Toast with butter and peanut butter would be good. All the foods most of us should be cutting down on in fact.

Good point, Shandy. I was going to say the same thing. Also, I think it might help to try smaller quantities of a wider range of things. So not a whole tub of cottage cheese at once, maybe, but rather a spoonful on a little plate with some other snack foods - little tomatoes, perhaps? Guacamole is nice with crackers or breadsticks, so is houmous. Do you like Mozarella, Jean? They do that as a packet ot tiny balls of cheese, and some of those on a plate with tomatoes and pickles and a bit of nice bread on the side can make a good little plateful in hot weather. Of course you could just buy regular mozarella and slice it as the Greeks do! Can you eat petits pois? In hot weather I don't cook them, just defrost them, and they are deliciously fresh tasting. What else is good for protein in hot weather? Coleslaw, potato salad, "egg and tomato" with or without buttered bread, cold ham or chicken or cooked salmon (all of which can be ordered in with ease)......

It is interesting that we spend so many years "watching our diet", that when we reach an age where we struggle to get enough calories and nutrition, we also struggle to recognise this point. My mother's care home used to serve her an enriched hot chocolate, with delicious little cookies or small slices of cake so as not to overwhelm her delicate appetite. It's not really hot chocolate weather though.....

Jean, when you are drinking your bitter lemon, you probably don't need the low sugar one if that is what you have been selecting. My other suggestion would be to move to whole milk if you are on skimmed or semi skimmed.
Good luck with it, and with the progress towards the op.

Oh, JennyS again, sorry, the bit above about potato salad and coleslaw does not refer to protein, my clauses got out of place.

Resting is good after such a stressful activity.
Whole-milk cottage cheese is lovely on a hot day. Toast adds a nice crunch. Adding even more protein-rich foods later sounds like a good idea. Nut butters - I'm fond of almond butter - are one of my standbys for a quick little snack, though I have to be sure to take it in tiny bites and if on bread, chew thoroughly.
Good for you, and for the doctor, getting you in on the NHS.

The hospital visit sounds positive, if exhausting. I do not have to be tempted to eat, so I'll leave suggestions to others. Wordle in six this morning, I have having four letters in the correct order with many options to choose from for the fifth!
